How the diagnosis works

The diagnosis is built on the Flare Bottleneck Matrix, an instrument we use in consulting engagements to find what is actually slowing a MadCap Flare documentation project down. It scores eight factors that cover the whole production line, from raw SME input to published output:

  • Flare project setup. Templates, skins, targets, snippets, conditions, variables, and plugins. A weak foundation taxes every topic built on it.
  • Source material. SME input, specs, tickets, and API information from engineering. Bad input means detective work and rework.
  • Authoring and review. Topic workflow, review cycles, and approvals. Stalled reviews delay releases more than slow writing does.
  • People and skills. Writer proficiency, SME availability, and knowledge silos. Projects that live in one head are one resignation away from crisis.
  • Content debt. Orphaned topics, broken snippets, legacy structure, and inconsistent styles accumulated over years.
  • Single-sourcing complexity. The web of conditions, variables, snippets, and multi-target publishing that makes one change ripple into many places.
  • Build and publishing. Build times, batch targets, CI/CD integration, and output destinations.
  • External factors. Product changes, Flare upgrades, and compliance requirements arriving on someone else's schedule.

Each answer maps to a weighted severity scale, tuned so that one severe problem outranks several mild annoyances. The two factors with the highest scores are your bottlenecks, and fixing the top one usually eases the others, because most symptoms trace back to the same structural debt.
