Set ALT Texts

Set ALT texts · Set empty ALT where missing

Cleanup ⚡ tab → Image Tools group

Ensure consistent alt text across your project by setting the same alt text for all instances of the same image.

The tool lists every image under your Content folder, sorted by its path relative to the Content folder, so the order is always predictable. A one-pass scan of all topics and snippets builds an index of where each image is used and which alt texts it has, so navigation is fast even in large projects.

To set alt texts

  1. Click Set ALT texts in the Image Tools group.
  2. The tool scans your topics and snippets once (a progress bar shows the scan) and shows the image list on the left with these columns: Image, Folder, Used in (number of topics/snippets), and Alt status:
    • Missing - no usage of the image has an alt attribute
    • Set - all usages share the same alt text (an empty alt text, alt="", counts as set - it marks a decorative image)
    • Varies - usages have different alt texts, or some have alt text and some have none
    • Unused - the image is not referenced by any topic or snippet
  3. Click a column header to sort, or click any row to jump straight to that image - no need to click Next through images you have already done.
  4. Use the filters above the list to focus your work:
    • Only used in topics hides images that no topic or snippet references.
    • Only missing alt shows just the images that still need alt text - ideal for resuming work in a later session.
  5. If all usages of the image already share one alt text, it is prefilled in the edit box so you can see and refine it. When the values differ, the label shows a (varies) hint and the per-topic list below the image shows each usage's current alt text (or "(no alt attribute)").
  6. Enter the alt text you want and click Save. The alt text is applied to every instance of that image across all topics and snippets. Saving an empty value (after confirmation) sets alt="", marking the image as decorative.
  7. Click Next missing to skip straight to the next image without alt text, or use Next/Previous to move one image at a time.

To export a report of images missing alt text

Click Export missing above the image list to save a CSV report (image, alt status, used in) of all images that have at least one usage without alt text. Cancel the save dialog to copy the report to the clipboard instead.

To set an empty ALT on all images with no alt attribute

Flare targets have an option to generate empty alt attributes for untagged images at build time; this tool writes the same alt="" marker directly into your topics and snippets.

  1. Click Set empty ALT where missing in the Image Tools group.
  2. Choose the scope: the whole Content folder, or pick a subfolder.
  3. The tool pre-scans and tells you how many image references in how many files have no alt attribute at all.
  4. Confirm. A backup ZIP is placed on your desktop, the files are checked out if you use source control, and every img without an alt attribute gets alt="". Existing alt texts - including already-empty ones - are never touched.
  5. A summary shows how many images in how many files were changed.

Benefits

  • Ensures consistency - same image always has the same alt text
  • Predictable image order and jump-to-image list - resume multi-session alt text work without clicking Next through completed images
  • Saves time compared to setting alt text manually
  • Improves accessibility compliance - alt="" correctly marks decorative images for screen readers
  • Makes it easier to update alt text globally

Use Cases

  • Accessibility compliance projects
  • Consistent branding and descriptions
  • Bulk alt text management
  • Auditing and fixing missing alt texts

Tip: This tool is especially useful after importing content or when you need to standardize alt text across a large project.
