Add Header Row to Tables · Split Tables at Empty Column
Cleanup ⚡ tab → Table Tools group
Two table repair tools for the classic problems of imported tables: data rows that should be header rows, and two tables glued together with an empty "gutter" column between them.
Add Header Row to Tables
Converts the populated top row(s) of every table in the active topic into proper header rows (<thead>/<th>), keeping content, colspan/rowspan, conditions and classes.
- Open the topic.
- Click Add Header Row to Tables.
- Enter how many top rows should become header rows (1 for a normal header; 2–3 for multi-row headers).
- Confirm. The topic is backed up, transformed, saved, and reloaded in the editor.
Tables that already have a <thead>, whose top rows are already all <th>, or that have too few rows are skipped — the summary tells you how many. A table is never turned entirely into header rows.
Split Tables at Empty Column
Splits two-in-one tables in the active topic into two separate tables at an empty gutter column.
- Open the topic.
- Click Split Tables at Empty Column. The tool auto-detects gutter columns — a column (never the first or last) where every row, headers included, is empty.
- For each candidate table, confirm the split (when a table has several empty columns, you choose which one; columns are numbered from 1).
- The table becomes two sequential tables. The empty gutter column is dropped; headers, row/cell attributes, column definitions and table-level classes and conditions are carried over to both tables. The caption stays with the left table.
Columns crossed by a colspan/rowspan cell are not split — those tables are listed as skipped so you can handle them manually.
Notes
- Both tools work on the active topic only (no folder/project batch) and only on top-level tables — nested tables are ignored.
- A single-file backup is created before each change; restore it with Backup and Restore.
