Remove CDATA

Remove CDATA (topic) · Remove CDATA (project)

Cleanup ⚡ tab → Styling group

Unwraps ... sections in your topics and snippets so the text content is kept and properly escaped — another common import leftover that confuses editors and downstream tooling.

What happens

 • Each CDATA section is unwrapped into a plain text node; special characters like < and & are escaped correctly when the file is saved.
 • Whitespace-only CDATA sections are removed entirely.
 • CDATA inside and elements is deliberately left untouched (unwrapping would break the code) — the summary tells you how many such sections were skipped.

Remove CDATA in the current topic

 1. Open the topic.
 2. Click Remove CDATA (topic) in the Styling group.
 3. Confirm. The document is saved and backed up first, then transformed and reloaded in the editor.

Remove CDATA in the whole project

 1. Click Remove CDATA (project).
 2. Confirm. The scope is the whole Content folder including sub-folders — topics and snippets.
 3. Only the affected files are backed up to a ZIP archive (in your configured backup folder) and checked out of source control before they are changed.
 4. A summary reports how many sections were unwrapped and removed, and where the backup ZIP is.

Notes

 • Non-breaking spaces ( ) are preserved when the files are saved.
 • Files that cannot be parsed as XML are skipped and listed in the summary.
 • The ZIP backup is your undo — restore it with Backup and Restore.
